Album Review: "Songs Of" The Story So Far acoustic EP

Just over a year after their last album, "What You Don't See", which has since provoked the mainstream revival of pop punk, The Story So Far are back with a brand new, all-acoustic EP.

The 5 track record consists of mainly acoustic versions of their own songs, opening with an acoustic version of "The Glass". Slowed down and peaceful, it sounds enchanting, and you can already picture yourself sitting listening to this whilst chilling with your friends over the summer. However, the original version of this song is definitely better so it's not a great opening track.

Luckily, second comes "Navy Blue". A brand new song; it's definitely the strongest on the EP. The lyrics to this song are truly beautiful and everything about it just feels so right. Here, Parker Cannon shows that he has a voice perfectly adapted for acoustic songs, setting expectations high for the rest of the record.

The acoustic version of "Bad Luck" is really strong with really catchy guitar riffs and is definitely the best of the covers. Parker's voice is particularly good on this track, and it really shows that he has a much better voice than one might assume from their albums.

Their cover of Bob Marley's "Waiting in Vain" is a nice touch and really adds to the relaxing feel of the record. It has some really nice guitar riffs and a good drum beat, however Parker seems to have adopted a Jamaican accent in this track, and it feels that this song could have been a whole lot better if he had just sang like himself.

There's also a 40 second snippet of an acoustic version of "All Wrong". It actually sounds like this has great potential, so it's a little confusing as to why they didn't decide to cover the whole song.

"Songs Of" is a really nice EP definitely worth a listen for any pop punk fan, and actually anyone who usually prefers a more indie sound. That being said, The Story So Far's original acoustic songs such as "680 South" and "Jawbreaker" from "Under Soil and Dirt", are far better than the covers, so it is a little disappointing for longterm fans that there's only one real new song, especially with it [Navy Blue] being so brilliant.
